Technical Writing

This was one of the questions I had to answer in a recent interview. "How is technical writing different from other forms of writing?". There was word and time restriction and I had written a different set of points from the ones explained below.

Now I am jotting down my thoughts without any restrictions. These might not be the right answers but my opinion.
  • Not a free flow writing-You have to follow the company-specific 'style guide'. With topic-based writing, you have to write reusable content, which requires little planning and strategy.
  • Short, clear and precise-Limited usage of adjective and adverbs. No beating around the bush.
  • More procedural-Though conceptual information is present, the concept precedes the procedures.
  • Information gathering-Thought you own the content, you do not own the concept. It has to be sourced from developers, testers, product management, and support. One needs to go through a variety of reference documents to come up with the content. It again needs to be approved by all stake-holders. Life gets difficult here. -:(  Though writing is the most important task, seems it is not so. The order of work is usually the following:
    • Requirement gathering
    • Content planning
    • Writing
    • Edit review/tech reviews
    • Production
  • Within a corporate environment, a technical writer needs time management skills, quick understanding of the concepts, and people management skills in addition to the basic writing skills. Of course only 25% of the work time is spent on core writing. Meetings, planning, e-mails, production, and verification take up the remaining time.

Cauvery issue

This is one thing which I have heard for long years. But being in Bangalore, this feeling is different. There is a bandh tomorrow and I am bit frightened.

It is the duty of the govt to safeguard it's people. Why should farmers be out in such a pathetic situation? I know that in TN, farmer nowadays sounds synonymous to being poor. They are really in pathetic situation. They are selling their lands to educate their kids or to get girls married off, and finally end up in not having anything.

Why doesn't the govt do anything to save the farmers. Among all the world countries, I think only in India agriculture and farming are given least importance.

I guess that farmers in both the states will be benefited only by proper showers of rain. No govt or policy can save them.

I don't believe in luck

Luck- A word which everybody likes to use. I also used to believe that there is something like luck...No it is not...I stay firm.. All good and prosperity comes to people who stay focussed @ work in hand, work hard/smart, have good self-esteem and most importantly understand themselves. I will never use the word lucky to address people who have acheived something in life. It is derogatory. Anything from a good education, job, friends, relationship and health have to be earned, saved and cherished. Remember..."There is no free lunch".

Optimism

I keep on hearing this word again and again. Can I call myself an optimist? Well not sure. I am optimistic of tomorrow.

I have always felt these two things :
Today is definitely better than yesterday.
Tomorrow will be better than today.

I believe in living today but never had a doubt that tomorrow is going to be bad. Well, I guess I am optimistic of future.

But something is wrong, do I procastinate my things to be done today b'coz tomorrow is always better? Gotta be careful.

What did others think of me?

I am @ home now. I login facebook, orkut and gmail in the afternoons. I get a chance to chat with many of my friends, school and college during this time. Its nice to chat about the old friends, school, the funny incidents that happened then.

I have always wanted to know from my college friends what I was in college. I know I was bit reserved. But what did others think of me?

In one of the chats, my college friend made a remark that his friends considered me very silent but an excellent or good human being...Wow, I was so happy. I heard the same from some other friend also. I still consider my (1998-2002)as the worst period in my life, this is not w.r.t to my college, or friends or anything related to it. It was @ home front. Anyways, I have earned some good name in what I consider the worst period. Relieved to some extent!
